19 Aug 2024 Kansas City One Health Day: Call for Student Abstracts
To inspire the next generation of scientists, doctors and veterinarians, high school and college students (undergraduate and graduate) are encouraged to present a research poster and compete for cash scholarships at the upcoming Kansas City One Health Day.
What is One Health Day?
- One Health Day is an international event every fall. It highlights and celebrates the complex interrelationships between human, animal, and environmental health — called One Health. The local celebration is organized by organized by University of Kansas Edwards Campus, Kansas State University Olathe, BioNexus KC and KU Medical Center.
What is expected from students
As noted in the attached invitation, applicants will:
- Register to attend. There is a registration fee for this lunch event. Student poster presenters will receive a fee waiver after submitting an abstract. Scholarships for other students are available to cover registration fees. To apply, contact Shaylee Yount with name, institution and brief statement of what interests you about the KC One Health Day event. Student poster presenters will receive a fee waiver when an abstract is submitted.
- Submit a title and abstract of no more than 250 words, to Terri Woodburn, by October 9, 2024.
Students can compete for cash scholarship awards (high school-$200, undergraduate-$300 and graduate-$400) by presenting their research in person, whether it be from a bench, clinical, or literature review experience, with projects from a previous competition allowed. Any One Health research topic is acceptable. One Health topics might include, but are not limited to, emerging infectious diseases, food safety and security, antimicrobial resistance, invasive species, environmental pollution, and loss of biodiversity. This year’s theme is Food as Medicine.
Special notes
- The primary abstract author must be in attendance. If this is not the first author of the poster, note who is first author as well as the presenting author. The presenting poster author and any other authors attending must be registered. A fee waiver will be provided to the presenting author.
- The student submitting the abstract must indicate educational level (High School, Graduate Level or Undergraduate Level)
Timeline
October 9 – Applications due
October 24 – Notification of abstract acceptance
November 1
10:45-11:30 a.m. Arrival, poster set up and lunch for poster presenters
11:30 a.m. -1 p.m. Poster judging
1-3 p.m. One Health Day program
2:45 p.m. Scholarship winners awarded. Winners will be expected to deliver a one-minute “elevator pitch” to the audience upon acceptance of their award.
3 p.m. Posters can be dismantled and taken at the conclusion of the event.
