UMKC offers healthcare career preparation through STAHR Scholars

Students interested in pursuing careers in healthcare or enhancing their competitiveness for college and health education program applications may find valuable opportunities through the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s STAHR Scholars Program.

STAHR, an acronym for Students Training in Academia, Health, and Research, is a collaborative initiative led by UMKC’s School of Dentistry, School of Medicine and School of Pharmacy. The free program is designed to support students aspiring to become healthcare professionals by providing education, mentorship and hands-on experiences. Students who complete program requirements are eligible for a stipend.

Program Highlights

Participants in the STAHR Scholars Program:

– Take a deep dive into in dentistry, medicine or pharmacy, or explore all three;
– Learn what the work looks like through clinical shadowing with practicing health professionals;
– Gain first-hand experience in university lab settings;
– Develop admission materials to strengthen applications for college and health education programs; and
– Access academic enrichment and study resources tailored to prepare for the DAT or MCAT (test prep tracks only).

After the summer program, students build on those experiences with opportunities from August to April, including:

– Coaching and mentorship provided by current healthcare students, faculty and UMKC staff;
– Community service and healthcare-related experiences;
– Continued development of application materials to enhance competitiveness; and
– Networking with a diverse range of individuals and resources that support progress toward healthcare careers.
